Three In First Lifts Bulls Past Cats 7-2


WICHITA FALLS, TX – Three first period goals were more than enough for the Amarillo Bulls as they dumped the Wichita Falls Wildcats 7-2 on Friday night at Kay Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls Texas.

The victory, which was the Bulls 32nd of the season, pushed them five points ahead of the Texas Tornado for first place in the South Division. The Tornado dropped their fourth straight and second to the Topeka RoadRunners on home ice.

Blake Roubos sparked the Bulls attack with two goals and seven shots on goal. Mike Davis, Dan McNamara, Clint Carlisle and TJ Sarcona earned single tallies. Paul Berrafato was busy in goal stopping 26 of 28 shots he faced.

The offensive attack was in fine form for the Amarillo Bulls in the opening 20 minutes. Three goals spread out over the stanza staked the Bulls to a 3-0 advantage. TJ Sherman notched his fourth of the year with a blast from the point from Tyler Deresky and Hampus Gustafsson. Midway through the period, the power play got going when Blake Roubos fired a shot top shelf to make it 2-0. Joe Grabowski and Geoff Fortman earned assists on the play. Roubos wasn’t done yet as he got his second in a row from TJ Sarcona at 17:33. The Bulls outshot the Wildcats 18-8.

The second period was dominated by the goaltenders and the defense. No goals were scored but the Wildcats outshot Amarillo 11-10. Goaltender Paul Berrafato made a couple of great saves including one off of Elliot Grauer near the front of the net.

The Bulls blew the game open in the third period with three straight goals. Just over 90 seconds into the period, Mike Davis scored on a play at the front of the net from Hampus Gustafsson and Ryan Cole.  Dan McNamara notched his first goal in a Bulls’ uniform when he converted a feed from Brady Ferguson and Ryan Cole.

Just over a minute later, Clint Carlisle tipped home a shot from Tyler Rostenkowski on the power play to make it 6-0.

The Wildcats netted two consecutive goals to spoil the shutout of Paul Berrafato. The first goal was via the power play and the second came shorthanded.

TJ Sarcona rounded out the scoring with a power play goal from Tyler Gernhofer in the final 90 seconds of the game.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Wichita Falls Wildcats 42-28, including 14-9 in the third period. There were six total power plays with the Bulls going 3 for 4, while the Wildcats were 1 for 2.

The second game of the weekend between the Bulls and the Wildcats is set for tomorrow (Saturday) at Kay Yeager Coliseum at 7:15 pm.
