BLAINE, MN – For the first time since December of 2014, the Amarillo Bulls have won three games in a row.
Kosta Likourezos scored twice and added two helpers to lift the Bulls past the Aberdeen Wings 5-2 on Saturday night at the 2016 North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota. The Bulls and the Minot Minotauros are the lone unbeaten teams in the Showcase. If the Bulls win in their final game versus the Janesville Jets, and the Minotauros fall to the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, the Amarillo would win the Showcase title for the first time. Should both teams win their games then it will come down to a goal differential to decide a champion.
The Bulls trailed 2-1 entering the third period when the offense caught fire with three goals in a span of three minutes. Goaltender Nikita Babintsev stopped 30 of 32 shots he faced for his third straight victory.
Scott Langer’s Aberdeen Wings raced out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first two minutes of the game that snapped the shutout string of Babintsev at 62 plus minutes. Despite falling behind, the Bulls kept pushing the offense and managed 13 first period shots.
In the second period, the Bulls pulled even when George Mika deflected home a shot from Hayden Broomhead and Kosta Likourezos at 4:40. Late in the stanza, Carter Roo fired a shot that went off the post and was deflected in the net by Babintsev and defenseman Matt Nehls. Aberdeen outshot Amarillo 14-8 in the period and 22-21 overall.
For the 2nd time in the Showcase, the Bulls rallied and erased a one-goal deficit. Kosta Likourezos scored off a face-off win from George Mika at 6:52. The two combined for the eventual game winner less than a minute later as Mika found Likourezos open for the one-timer that went in under the cross bar. The Bulls were not done yet as Broomhead scored on the power play from Likourezos who nabbed his fourth point. In the final minute Charlie Singerhouse rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal.
The Amarillo Bulls and the Aberdeen Wings each had 32 shots on goal. For the third straight gam the Amarillo penalty killing was strong and prevented the opposition from getting any type of sustained attack.
The last game of the NAHL Showcase for the Amarillo Bulls is set for 12:30 tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon against the Janesville Jets. Fans can tune into the action beginning with Pre-Game coverage at 12:10 pm on CBS Sports Radio 1440, online at www.amarillbulls.com and on PPV with Fast Hockey.
