Strong Third Pushes Bulls Past Jackalopes

AMARILLO, TX — The Amarillo Bulls accomplished something they hadn’t been able to do in several weeks and that was complete a weekend sweep at home.

Trey Bagwell scored twice and the Bulls used a strong third period to hold off the Odessa Jackalopes 4-2 on Saturday night in front of over 3,400 at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.

Matt Allen and Alex Peterson had the other goals. Allen’s goal was key as it stopped a third-period comeback attempt by Odessa. It was the rookie’s second big goal in as many games. Justin Evenson made his return in goal a strong one, stopping 25 of 27 shots he faced.

The Bulls posted their 35th win of the season and just one away from clinching their first South Division title in five years and fourth in the 9 years of the franchise.

Trey Bagwell scored the first period’s only goal when he snuck one through the armor of goaltender Alex Camarre. Cooper Fensterstock and Brenden Datema added assists on the play.

The visitors hung around in the second period and tied the game on a power play goal by Vaclav Zidek. The Bulls went back to their hard work and rewarded for their efforts with a couple of markers. Alex Peterson scored his fourth of the weekend from Gabriel Seger and Logan Jenuwine. Just before the end of the stanza, the teams traded markers. Trey Bagwell notched his second of the game from Jordan Venegoni and Louis Helsen. The Jackalopes got to within a goal again when Connor Fedorek scored on an odd-man rush.

The home side turned on the jets in the third period and played a tight defensive game, preventing the Jackalopes from tying the game. Matt Allen tallied the insurance goal on a great second effort from Logan Jenuwine and Brett Abdelnour.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Odessa Jackalopes 39-27.
