CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Gage Christianson, Michael Davis and Tyler Deresky each had two goals and TJ Sarcona added four assists as the Amarillo Bulls overpowered the Corpus Christi IceRays 9-3 at American Bank Center on Sunday afternoon.
It was the eighth win of the season for the Bulls and it extended their point collection streak to seven games.
“The players answered my challenge from last night,” said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams after the game. “They played hard, moving and shooting pucks, as well as getting to those tough areas to score. We kept our cool and stayed away from the extra stuff after the whistle. We dedicated ourselves to winning this hockey game, and I was proud with the effort from the net right on out.”
The difference in the game was the opening 20 minutes for the Bulls as they responded with three goals and dominated much of play. Michael Davis scored first for the Bulls when he followed up a rebound off the face-off from TJ Sarcona and John Rey at 10:42. Three minutes later, the Bulls made it 2-0 when Gage Christianson scored on the power play off another scramble inside the IceRays’ zone. Sarcona and Connor Frey earned assists on the goal.
The IceRays scored a goal late in the stanza to trim the lead to 2-1, but Tyler Deresky’s second effort gave Amarillo a 3-1 lead at the break from Hampus Gustafsson and John Rey at 19:33. The Amarillo Bulls outshot Corpus Christi 12-10.
A wild second period had the Bulls seeing red and scoring six times. There was a skirmish along the boards that excited both benches and words were exchanged between the benches. Ryan Cole and Brady Ferguson scored 67 seconds part to make it 5-1. Matt Sieckhaus and TJ Sarcona got assists on the goals. Three more goals less than two minutes apart extended the score to 8-1. Gage Christianson, Matt Sieckhaus and Mike Davis scored for Amarillo, while Ferguson, Sarcona, Hampus Gustafsson and Ryan Cole picked up assists. Tyler Deresky notched his second of the game to make it 9-1. Garrett Peterson added an assist. The IceRays scored late in the second period to close out the scoring.
The Bulls outshot the IceRays 17-5 in that middle stanza.
The third period featured solid defensive play by the Bulls despite the IceRays scoring the last goal to round out the scoring.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the IceRays 43-21 in the game. Special teams came up big for Amarillo with three power play markers in four attempts.
Hockey returns to the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center when the Amarillo Bulls host the Texas Tornado on Friday and Saturday night at 7 pm. On Friday’s Pink It Out Night as fans are encouraged to wear pink at the game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Bulls will also be selling pink t-shirts with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Breast Cancer. On Saturday fans are courage to dress up for a Halloween Costume Contest that will take place.
