ODESSA, TX – The Amarillo Bulls fired two power play goals in the first 40 minutes of the game and went on to a 3-1 victory over the Odessa Jackalopes at Ector County Coliseum on Friday night.
It was the Bulls 19th win of the season and they were able to keep pace with the Texas Tornado and the Topeka RoadRunners for top spot in the South Division. The standings remained unchanged as Topeka has a one point ahead over the Bulls and Tornado for first.
The Bulls limited the Jackalopes chances in the contest and didn’t allow them to score five-on-five. Goaltender Paul Berrafato made some key saves to preserve the win.
It was a good opening 20 minutes for the Amarillo Bulls as they were able to get 19 shots on goal and score via the power play. Geoff Fortman found the back of the net on a rebound from Tyler Deresky and Brady Ferguson at the 10:34 mark. Despite the shots being close for the first six minutes of the game, the Bulls were able to get rolling and outgunned their opponents 19-9.
The Bulls extended their lead to 2-0 early in the middle stanza with their second power play goal. TJ Sherman’s shot from the point found its mark from Geoff Fortman and TJ Sarcona at 2:47. Amarillo controlled most of the play, but was unable to get any even strength chances on goaltender Phil Heinle. Paul Berrafato was called upon to make some nice save to preserve the lead. The Bulls outshot the Jackalopes 18-11 in the period and 37-20 overall.
With 6:05 gone in the third period, Mike Davis gave the Bulls a 3-0 lead in the third period when his slap shot hand-cuffed the goaltender. Tyler Rostenkowski and TJ Sarcona grabbed assists on the goal. Odessa spoiled the shutout bid of Berrafato with a power play marker in the final five minutes of the third period. Despite being outshot 10-9 in the final 20 minutes, the Bulls were firmly in control of the category 44-30.
There were nine total power plays in the contest with the Bulls going 2 for 5 and the Jackalopes were 1 for 5.
The two teams will wrap up their two game series tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7:05 pm at Ector County Coliseum. Fans can tune into the game live on ESPN1440 with pre-game show coverage at 6:50 pm.
