Amarillo, Tx(May 15, 2021)-The Amarillo Bulls are proud to announce Paul Schmid has committed to play D1-college hockey at the University of St.Thomas next season.
“After an extremely challenging year, I am excited to start a new chapter with the University of St. Thomas next season,” Schmid said. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to join such a great school and play D1 college hockey.”
Schmid joined the Bulls this season for his first year playing North American hockey after spending the previous two years playing in Norway. The Austria native joined the Bulls late but quickly made his presence felt in the lineup upon arrival.
“Paul has had a difficult year managing the challenges of being an import during the pandemic.” Head Coach Rocky Russo said. “He has faced those challenges head-on and been an impactful player for us when he was available to play,” Russo said.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Schmid was unable to join the Bulls due to strict visa rules and spent time in Turkey before being able to join his team in Amarillo. Despite those hurdles, Schmid has showcased his skills in the NAHL this season.
In his 41 games with the Bulls this season, Schmid has 20 points(11G,9A) and has given strong effort at both ends of the ice to develop into a strong 200-foot player.
“I want to thank everyone that has supported me along the way for making this possible,” Schmid said. “I would also like to thank the Bulls organization for giving me the platform to get this opportunity, helping me develop and adapt into American hockey quickly,”
The University of St. Thomas is located in St. Paul, MN, and will transition to Division 1 this fall. In their previous season, the Tommies lead DIII men’s hockey programs in all-time victories and completed their 39th consecutive winning season.
“Paul is going to make an immediate positive impact for Coach Blasi and the St. Thomas hockey team as well as being a great addition to the academic community,” Russo said.
In his first game after announcing his commitment, Schmid scored twice for the Bulls to lead them to a 4-to-3 win over Odessa in the final weekend before the Robertson Cup Playoffs being May 20.
The Amarillo Bulls are members of the North American Hockey League which is a tier II junior hockey league sanctioned by USA Hockey. For more information visit https://www.amarillobulls.com
