AMARILLO, TX – The North American Hockey League announced (today) Monday that Amarillo Bulls netminder, Nikifor Szczerba, has been selected as the SBK Hockey NAHL Goaltender of the Week.
Szczerba backstopped the Bulls to a two-game sweep over the New Mexico Mustangs, turning aside 58 of 60 shots. On Friday, the Poland native made 38 saves in an 8-2 victory — and then the following night stopped all 20 shots he faced in a 5-0 victory by the Bulls.
“Nikifor has been excellent in net,” said Bulls assistant coach Rocky Russo. “He’s poised and smart and gives our team confidence every time he steps in the crease.”
Szczerba is second amongst NAHL goaltenders with a 1.48 Goals Against Average, and save percentage with .952. He leads the league in wins with 7, shutouts with two, fourth in minutes played at 445:41 and saves with 217.
Bulls forward Cody Freeman was an honorable mention for NAHL South Division Player of The Week. He tallied two goals and added three helpers in the two wins over New Mexico.
Hockey returns to the Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center this Saturday when the Amarillo Bulls entertain the Texas Tornado at 7 pm. The Bulls will debut their third jerseys that night.
