AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls, proud members of the North American Hockey League, announced today (Tuesday) that Matt Johnson was chosen as the South Division Player Of The Week.
Johnson notched one goal and four assists to power the Bulls to five out of a possible six points and gain sole possession of second place in the division.
“It’s a great honor, but I have to give a lot of credit to the guys I play with Zack (Smoot) and Danny (Sherer),” Johnson said. “We found a way to get things going with 18 points in three games.”
“Matt’s become a complete player this season,” said Bulls head coach Dennis Williams. “He plays in all situations and makes his teammates better every time he’s on the ice. He’s also an alternate captain who leads both vocally and by example.”
On Thursday, the Clinton Township, Michigan native had three assists as the Bulls blanked the New Mexico Mustangs 3-0. The following night he posted a goal and an assist as Amarillo dumped the Corpus Christi IceRays 7-3. Johnson was also a plus five over the weekend.
In 46 games for the Bulls, Johnson has notched 19 goals and added 18 assists for 37 points and is a plus 18 this season.
The Amarillo Bulls return to action this week with a three game road trip that begins Thursday night with a huge showdown against the Texas Tornado at 7:30 pm. The road swing continues on Sunday and Monday with a doubleheader against the Corpus Christi IceRays. Sunday’s game is set for a 3 pm start, while Monday’s game, originally scheduled for Saturday, starts at 7:05 pm.
