NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX – The Amarillo Bulls played a spirited game against the Lone Star Brahmas on Saturday night here at NYTEX Sports Center. Two third period goals in the last 10 minutes of the game, lifted the host Brahmas past the Amarillo Bulls 4-3.
The game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes as the Bulls gave everything they had. Amarillo had the lead early in the third only to see the Brahmas tie the game with a power play goal and win the game on a play in front of the net in the last six minutes of regulation. Jacob Nitsche, Nick Santoro and Nick Bohatiuk scored for Amarillo. Anton Martinson played well despite taking the loss in goal.
The Amarillo Bulls came out stronger in the opening period and put pressure on the Brahmas inside the zone. Joey Molinaro was able to move in but his shot was stopped by goaltender Corbin Kazcperski. The Brahmas jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a shot from the blue line just 3:51 into the stanza. The rest of the period was dominated by special teams as the Bulls had to kill off three straight penalties. Lone Star outshot Amarillo 13-4 in the first period.
Second periods have been a problem this season for the Bulls but that wasn’t the case in this game. Amarillo played well in the middle stanza despite falling behind 2-0 on a controversial call. The Brahmas player batted the puck in what appeared to be with a high stick. The referee said that wasn’t the case and called the play legal. That didn’t stop the Bulls as they kept pressing. Jacob Nitsche drew the visitors to within a goal when he scored on a breakaway from Jake Houston and Tyler Hall. That goal was on the power play and just the fourth allowed by Lone Star this season. Five minutes later, the Bulls got the equalizer and again it was the long stretch pass that did the trick. Nick Santoro was sent in by Jake Houston and he fired the puck past the stick side of the goaltender. The Bulls were outshot 13-9 in the period.
The Bulls continued their torrid play in the third period when Nick Bohatiuk deflected home a shot from Matt Nehls to give the visitors the lead Zach Sarnowski also assisted on the goal. After that the Brahmas kept pushing and tied the game on a power play goal with a rebound in front. It was a wild last five minutes with Lone Star getting the eventual game winner on a delayed penalty call. In the final minute the Bulls pulled their goaltender but couldn’t get the equalizer.
The Lone Star Brahmas outshot the Amarillo Bulls 38-20. Each team had a power play goal.
