Last second goal lifts Bulls to Exhibition Win

AMARILLO, TX – Last season the Amarillo Bulls were bitten by the late game goals where the opposition was allowed to pull out contests in the third period or in overtime.

The Bulls turned the tables to start the 2017-18 Pre-Season Schedule, and gave New Head Coach Rocky Russo his first win behind the bench.

Marcus Chorney scored with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation time to lift Russo’s charges past the Odessa Jackalopes 2-1 in the first of two Exhibition games at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The two teams will face one another on Saturday at 1 pm.

The Bulls dressed three players who had North American Hockey League experience in the contest, but that didn’t stop them. The youngsters who had battled all week vying for spots took their aggression out on the opposition. After a slow start to play, the Bulls began to take over capitalizing on Odessa turnovers and penalties.

Connor Witherspoon gave Amarillo a 1-0 advantage with just under seven minutes left in the first stanza. Witherspoon scooped up the puck off a bad pass by the Jackalopes player and put his shot up high past Brett Epp. Three minutes later the Jackalopes tied the game when Petr Miko scored off a face-off win past goaltender Jason Grande. Amarillo outshot Odessa 13-10 in the first period.

There was no scoring in the middle stanza and just 15 shots between the two teams. Fans got to see a little rough and tumble play as Bronson Adams of the Bulls and Connor Stuart dropped the gloves.

Amarillo picked up the play in the third period and at times pressured the Jackalopes inside their own end. With time winding down in regulation time, the Bulls kept the puck in at the blue line and Marcus Chorney fired the puck that beat Brett Epp on the glove side.

Alex Massanko posted the win in goal as he came on in relief of starter Jason Grande.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Odessa Jackalopes 30-25.
