AMARILLO, TX – Sean Keane’s first goal as a member of the Amarillo Bulls couldn’t have come at a better time. Keane, who came over from the Wichita Falls Wildcats, fired the game winner late in the third period to lift the Bulls past the New Mexico Mustangs 2-1 on Friday night at The Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
It was the Bulls 26th win of the season, and it propelled them into a tie for second place with the Texas Tornado who had their game with Wichita Falls postponed due to weather issues.
Friday’s game in the Texas Panhandle was a tightly played affair that was dominated by the goaltenders Nikifor Szczerba of the Bulls and Marco WeIser of the Mustangs. The two put on a show making big saves to keep the game even.
The Bulls outworked the Mustangs in the third period and the winning goal was set up by extended pressure inside the New Mexico zone. Brandon Lubin kept the puck in at the blue line and his shot was turned away by Weiser, but then the rebound was put into the open net by Keane.
It a decent start to the game for the Bulls as they came out dictated pace early, but it would be New Mexico that would tally first on a 2 on 1. The Bulls tied the game less than a minute later when Matt Johnson scored from Zack Smoot and Brandon Lubin at 14:04.
Each team had two power plays, and Amarillo outshot New Mexico 15-11 in the first.
There was no scoring in the second of play, but both teams had some terrific chances to score. There were a total of 10 power plays in the contest with neither team scoring a goal. The Bulls outshot New Mexico 40-29 including 14-8 in the third period.
The two teams will play again tomorrow (Saturday) night back in Amarillo at 7 pm. The game is sponsored by Suddenlink Communications, and the first 500 fans will receive Thundersticks. Several Blu-Ray DVD players will also be given away during the contest.
