AMARILLO, TX – As the Amarillo Bulls get ready for their showdown with their arch rival Topeka RoadRunners starting tomorrow (Friday) night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center, one returning defenseman will have something special added to his jersey.
The Bulls announced today that defenseman Geoff Fortman has been named Assistant Captain. In 13 games, the Crystal Lake, Illinois native has three goals and three assists for six points and just two penalty minutes. Forman is third on the team in plus-minus at plus 15 and has 18 shots on goal.
“Geoff has done a very nice job mentoring the younger players,” said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. “It wasn’t that long ago that Geoff was in their shoes. His play obviously speaks for itself as he has become one of the top defenseman not only on our team but in the entire league.”
Williams said Fortman’s work ethic and community involvement has been excellent.
“He also leads us vocally in the locker room,” he added. “After his excellent rookie season, there were high expectations placed on him and he has answered the bell. In regards to his play on the ice, I expect him to continue to be one of the premier defenseman in the North American Hockey League.
In 52 games for the Bulls last year, Fortman picked up two goals and 10 assists for 12 points and was plus 45.
Fortman said he is honored to be chosen as Assistant Captain and wants to continue to lead by example.
“It is very exciting,” said Fortman. “I know for the coaches and even John Rey and TJ Sarcona who are already captains and went in and brought up my name, to have that confidence in me, to give me that position is a great honor.”
Fortman said the position of Assistant Captain means that what he is doing is working.
“I have the confidence of the coaches and my teammates behind me and I appreciate that,” he explained. “At the end of the day, it won’t change the way that I am whether I have the letter on my jersey or not. I am going to be the same leader.”
It’s a big weekend of hockey and giving back to the community this weekend as the Amarillo Bulls host the Topeka RoadRunners at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. Friday’s game is sponsored by McDonald’s, while Saturday is United Way Night. The Bulls will wear their specialty jerseys and a live action follows immediately after the game.
