AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls took matters into their own hands on Friday night.
Mike Davis scored three times and assisted on another while several other players had multi-point games as the Bulls blasted the Odessa Jackalopes 8-2 at Ector County Coliseum. The Bulls are one win away from clinching their third straight South Division regular season title and home ice advantage throughout the Division playoffs plus a first round date with the Wichita Falls Wildcats.
Other marksmen for the Bulls were Kyle Gattelaro, Dean Rhymer with his first NAHL goal, Tyler Gernhofer, Mitchell McPherson and Matt Siekchaus. Gattelaro had three assists, while Carter Penzien, Brady Ferguson and Brendan Vetter each had two. Collin Delia posted the win in goal and his fifth against the Jackalopes this season.
It was a good start to the game for the Amarillo Bulls as they came out strong putting lots of pucks on goaltender Eric Hancock. Dean Rhymer notched his first NAHL goal to begin the scoring late in the first stanza when his shot just got under the cross bar from Kyle Gattelaro. Three minutes later, the Jackalopes pulled even capitalizing on a rebound in front of the net. The Bulls and the Jackalopes each had eight first period shots.
The Bulls offense caught fire in the second period scoring four times including three in the first 11 minutes. Kyle Gattelaro got things started on a nice passing play from Mike Davis and Brady Ferguson. One minute later, Matt Sieckhaus tipped home a shot from Carter Penzien and Timmy Moore. Eight minutes after that, Mike Davis scored on a rebound via the power play goal from Patrick Pollock and Kyle Gattelaro.
The Jackalopes trimmed the lead to 4-2 when they converted a scramble in front of the net. But near the end of the period, Mike Davis grabbed his second goal of the period from Brady Ferguson and Brendan McGuire. The Bulls outshot the Jackalopes 21-14 in the second period.
The power play took over in the third period as the Bulls rounded out the scoring with three special team goals on 25 shots. Tyler Gernhofer ripped a shot from by goaltender Eric Hancock from Brett Szajner. Three minutes later, Mike Davis completed his hattrick from Kyle Gattelaro and Brendan Vetter. Mitchell McPherson closed out the scoring in the final five minutes from Roman Ammirato.
The Amarillo Bulls doubled the Odessa Jackalopes in shots 54-27. There were 16 combined power plays with the Bulls going 4 for 12, while the Jacks were 0 for 4.
