AMARILLO, TX – The number five proved to be unlucky for the Amarillo Bulls on Friday night.
The Bulls surrendered five straight goals after scoring the first of the game and dropped a 5-2 decision to the Wichita Falls Wildcats in The Bull Pen at the Amarillo Civic Center. The loss ended the Bulls winning streak at five games. For the Wichita Falls Wildcats, the victory stopped their two games losing streak.
It was a chippy game that featured 100 minutes in penalties and several fights. There were a total of 11 power plays that neither team connected on. The two teams won’t have long to forget about one another as they will meet again on Saturday night back in the Amarillo Civic Center.
It was also the first game for the Bulls without goaltender Nikifor Szczerba who sustained an injury and will be lost for an undisclosed amount of time. Chris Eiserman, who was brought in from the USHL, started in goal for the Bulls and played well despite giving up the five goals. Mac Haight came on in relief to finish the game in the third period.
The Bulls got off to a flying start in the opening 20 minutes firing 15 shots on net and had the Wildcats on the ropes but only managed one goal. Cody Freeman made his return to the line-up productive as he scored on a feed from Zack Smoot and Kyle Sucher at 8:13.
After that goal, the Wildcats took over and tied the game 1-1 and then proceeded to score two more in the second period and another two in the third.
In the third period, with the score 5-1, the Bulls would round out the scoring with a shorthanded goal from Freeman. Derek Hills got an assist on the marker. It was the first shorthanded goal by the Bulls this season.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Wichita Falls Wildcats 28-25 including 15-6 in the opening period.
The short two-game homestand for the Amarillo Bulls concludes tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7 pm. The Wildcats and the Bulls second straight meeting and third in the last eight days should be very intense and exciting.
