AMARILLO, TX – Liam Ferguson and Johan Lundgren fired first period goals to power the Amarillo Bulls to their second win in a row, a 3-1 triumph over the Corpus Christi IceRays at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The victory pulled the Bulls to within two points of fifth place and four points of the fourth and final playoff spot occupied by the Odessa Jackalopes who are off on their Christmas break.
The Bulls played a strong game right from the opening puck drop using great defensive play including outstanding special teams to prevent the IceRays from mounting any type of offensive attack. There is one final game before the Christmas Break for the Bulls and that is set for tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7 pm against the IceRays.
It was a great start to the game for Matt Nicholson’s charges taking the play to the visitors. Liam Ferguson scored his second of the season and first at home when he followed up a rebound and put it past goaltender Graham Hunt. Charlie Singerhouse and John Evans earn assists on the play by working the puck along the boards and taking it away from the defensemen.
Six minutes later the Bulls added to their lead when Johan Lundgren scored on a great feed from Joey Molinaro and George Mika. Molinaro had the puck along the wall and spotted Lundgren alone in front of the net on the power play. That was the Bulls seventh power play goal in their last eight games. The Bulls outshot the IceRays 18-11 in the first period.
The second period was controlled by the visitors as they fired 11 shots towards Anton Martinsson who kept his team in front with some great saves. Jacob Nitsche nearly gave the Bulls a 3-0 as he rushed in on a shorthanded breakaway, but his shot sailed over top of the net.
Separation goals had been a problem for the Bulls in each of the last three games, but that wasn’t the case in the third period. Brady Crabtree raced down the ice and stuffed a puck on the short side of goaltender Hunt to make it 3-0. Trent Dillinger and Matt Meininger grabbed assist on the play.
The Bulls ran into penalty trouble late in the game and that allowed Corpus Christi to score and break the shutout of Anton Martinsson. The IceRays pulled their goaltender in the final 90 seconds looking to get to within a goal but failed to get the puck across the goal line.
The Corpus Christi IceRays outshot the Amarillo Bulls 42-38 including 20-15 in the third period. Each team had eight powerplays and was able to score once on the man advantage.
It’s a very special night on Saturday at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. Tyson Presents the Toys For Tots Teddy Bear Toss. Fans can bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or stuffed animal to the game and when the Bulls score their first goal then shower the ice with love in support of the Toys For Tots program.
