RIO RANCHO, NMX – Late goals have been very important lately to the success of the Amarillo Bulls. Each of the last two weeks, the late goals have propelled the Bulls to come-from-behind wins and tonight that late goal helped Amarillo nip the New Mexico Mustangs 3-2 at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
Mitch Rogge’s wrist shot beat New Mexico goaltender Matt Madore on the short side with just three seconds remaining in the second period. His goal stood up as the game winner. The Bulls had to hold off a third period barrage by the Mustangs who attempted the tie game, but were denied by goaltender Nikifor Szczerba.
The victory was the Bulls 11thof the season and their first on the road against a South Division opponent. It also helped extend the winning streak to four games.
The game didn’t start well for the Bulls as New Mexico netted a marker in the first five minutes of the game. However, Amarillo got that one back quickly when Terrance Johnson’s shot was deflected in by Chris Cass.
In the second period, the Bulls thought they had taken a 2-1 lead when the puck was jammed in at the side of the net. However, the referee waived the goal off. On the ensuing face-off, the Mustangs raced up the ice to score to make it 2-1.
The Bulls tied the game 2-2 about five minutes later when Matt Johnson’s wrist shot found the back of the net. That set up a fast skating last three minutes of the period and then Rogge’s goal to close out the stanza.
Amarillo outshot the New Mexico Mustangs 35-25. Neither team could convert a power play opportunity.
