Goaltender Alex Cathcart hopes to build on his experience from the season with the Willmar Warhawks (Minnesota) of the NA3HL and fight for a position on the 2017-18 Amarillo Bulls in the NAHL.
The Northridge, California native is the latest player to be tendered by the Bulls for the upcoming season. In 18 games with the Warhawks, Cathcart posted a record of 6-8 with a 3.58 Goals Against Average and a Save Percentage of .904. His hard work was also noticed later in the season when he was asked to be one of the goaltenders at the NA3HL Top Prospects events in Michigan.
“I think getting game experience was really big for my development,” Cathcart said. “Last year, I was more of a practice guy working in the rotation getting reps at the Junior level. And now I was able to use that practice experience and reps to apply it in a game.”
Cathcart said the experience he gained in Amarillo last season being a No. 3 goaltender helped his consistency.
“It really taught me that comparing practice to a game that in every practice and that every push, every movement you make has to be at 100 per cent,” he said. “In practice you really get 4-5 of those 100 per cent efforts. That’s the big difference.
“The constant consistency of the Amarillo Bulls last year helped me. From where I was the beginning of last year, to where I am now, it’s really different. At one point, I played like six of seven games in a row.”
Catchcart is thrilled to have another opportunity with the Bulls organization that he believes in so much.
“I really believe that the Amarillo Bulls is the sacred logo,” he said. “You can’t come to a better organization and have more class act people than Amarillo. That’s what has brought me back in. “
There have been a lot of ups and downs to the start of Cathcart’s Junior career in the past two years. But he said the support he received from the Coaching Staff in Willmar was huge.
“I have to give my Coach in Willmar Chris Blaisuis a lot of credit because there was times I was a little discouraged being in a lower league and team wasn’t doing that well,” he explained. “Coach Chris kept pushing, and focusing on what my goals were and where I wanted to be for next year. Where I was before to where I am now is night and day and I have the NA3HL to thank for that.”
Alex Cathcart joins, Michael McInerney, Brendan Furry, Brendan Datema, Tanner Palocsik and Jakob Hanthorn as players announced as tendered for the Amarillo Bulls for the 2017-18 season.
