TOPEKA, KS — It’s not to often that one team is dominant over another in a season series. That was the case for the Amarillo Bulls against the Topeka Pilots in the 2019-2020 campaign. The Bulls fired three first period goals and went on to beat the Pilots 5-2 on Saturday at Kansas Expo Center Landon Arena. That victory gave the Bulls all eight wins including the final two in Topeka.
Logan Jenuwine continued his strong play with a hattrick, while Ryan Lautenbach and Gabriel Seger had the others. Brenden Datema and Alex Peterson each set up two goals. Justin Evenson posted the win in goal and had his shutout bid stopped early in the third period.
It didn’t take long for the Bulls to strike offensively as the power play went to work. Gabriel Seger fired a shot from the face-off circle, beating McLean Dorr. Brenden Datema and Nick Anderson earned assists on the play.
Logan Jenuwine then went to work a short time later putting in back-to-back goals in a 1:17 span for his 45th and 46th of the season. Alex Peterson, Gabriel Seger and Brenden Datema assisted on those goals. The Bulls outshot Topeka 10-9 in the first period.
The middle stanza featured a flurry of 14 shots by the hometown Pilots but they were unable to break through on goaltender Justin Evenson. Logan Jenuwine completed his hattrick with a power play goal from Jason Brancheau and Alex Peterson.
Topeka finally broke through in the third period as Valdemar Ahlberg scored at the 2:26 mark. The Bulls quickly got that goal back as Ryan Launtenbach finished off a passing play from David Ojamae and Jake Willets. The Pilots rounded out the scoring on a goal by Connor Zilisch.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Topeka Pilots 33-31, including 12-8 in the third period.
