BLAINE, MN – The North American Hockey League Showcase has always treated the Amarillo Bulls very well in each of the past five years and they hope the trend continues when the event opens on Wednesday.
The Bulls begin play at the Showcase with a game against the Coulee Region Chill at 7:30 pm at the Schwann Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota. It will be the third time that the two teams have met and the second at the Showcase. Amarillo fell to the Chill 5-4 in a shootout back in 2011-2012.
Overall, the Bulls have an 11-5-4 mark through five appearances at the showcase and have won five straight opening day games.
Matt Nicholson’s charges are 1-1 entering the Showcase following a 6-3 win over the Odessa Jackalopes and a 2-1 loss to the defending South Division champion Lone Star Brahmas. The Chill has yet to play a regular season game.
Forward Joey Molinaro leads the way for Amarillo with four points (2 goals and 2 assists), while Johan Lundgren and George Mika each have three points.
All 22 NAHL teams will play four regular-season games at the Showcase. For scouting purposes, the NAHL Showcase is the premier event of its kind and is a yearly gathering for every NCAA program and NHL team as they get their first look at some of the best and brightest hockey talent North America has to offer. Last season over 330 NHL, NCAA and junior scouts attended the event.
The rest of the Showcase schedule has the Bulls playing back-to-back games at 1:30 pm against the Minnesota Wilderness and then the Minot Minotauros on Thursday and Friday. The Wilderness are the defending National Champions and it will be the second straight year that the Bulls will face a Robertson Cup champion (Fairbanks Ice Dogs 2014-15). The Bulls have never faced the Wilderness and the Minotauros before. On the final day of the Showcase (Saturday) the Bulls take on the Aston Rebels at 9 am. The Rebels were formerly the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees that were relocated from South Texas to Pennsylvania.
