Bulls Seven Game Win Streak Comes To End

SHREVEPORT, LA – One streak ended, while another one continued on Friday night at George’s Pond Hirsch Coliseum.

The Amarillo Bulls saw their seven game winning streak come to an end and in the process had their winless draught in the State of Louisiana extended to 10 games and two plus seasons. The hometown Shreveport Mudbugs scored two second period goals and held off the surging Bulls 3-1.

Cooper Fensterstock had the lone Bulls goal in the third period and it came on the power play. Jason Grande took the loss in goal which was his second of the season. Despite the setback, the Bulls remained tied for first place in the South Division with the Topeka Pilots who had the weekend off.

The first period was scoreless between the Bulls and the Bugs, with each team getting nine shots on goal apiece. Amarillo got off to a sluggish start and didn’t manage many good scoring chances until the stanza was nearly half old. Forward Cooper Fensterstock missed on a partial breakaway.

Shreveport jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first 6 minutes of the second period. Matthew Smoliga scored on a shot from the point and then Andrew Jackson completed a passing play at the side of the net. The Bulls nearly came close to getting back in the game with two power plays in the second half of the period but failed to push the puck past goaltender Maiszon Balboa. The Mudbugs outshot Amarillo 17-13 in the second period.

The power play gave the Mudbugs a 3-0 lead at the 4:05 mark of the third period as Andrew Jackson shoveled the puck into the net off a rebound in front.

The Bulls finally got on the board and it was the power play that connected Cooper Fensterstock fired a shot past the block of Balboa with help from Logan Jenuwine and Noah Carlin.

Down the stretch of the game, the Bulls kept pushing hoping to tally a couple of more times to tie the game but were stopped by the Mudbugs defensive play and the goaltending of Balboa.

The Shreveport Mudbugs outshot the Amarillo Bulls 34-27. Each team had four power plays and were able to score once each.

There is one more game remaining in the weekend series between the Amarillo Bulls and the Shreveport Mudbugs and it is set for Saturday at 7:11 pm at George’s Pond Hirsch Coliseum.
