AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls netted three goals nine minutes apart and held on to beat the Topeka RoadRunners 5-4 at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Wednesday night.
It was an exciting pre-season tilt between the two teams who battled hard right from the opening puck drop. Amarillo and Topeka will face one another again tomorrow (Thursday) night at 7 pm in the second of their two exhibition contests.
The Bulls led 2-1 going into the third period when Topeka scored two goals just over a minute apart to take a 3-2 advantage. It was all Amarillo after that, tallying three goals in nine minutes.
Matt Johnson tied the contest on a shorthanded goal unassisted at 14:08. Clint Carlisle gave the Bulls a 3-2 lead when he converted a 2 on 1 from Zane Popilock and Matt Johnson.
Darren McCormick gave the Bulls the lead for good when he fired a shot in the back of the net from Omar Mullan and Mitch Rogge on the power play.
Topeka rallied with a goal late but couldn’t get any closer.
The two teams then played a shootout that Amarillo won 2-1 thanks to goals from Matt Johnson and Karl Beckman.
Amarillo raced out to a 2-0 lead before the game was six minutes old. Michael Erickson scored in the first minute then Clint Carlisle just over five minutes later. Topeka closed the gap to 2-1 early in the second period.
Topeka outshot Amarillo 34-32 and the Bulls notched the game’s only power play goal. Gregg Gruehl posted the win in goal, out dueling Eric Rohrkemper.
