AMARILLO, TX – It’s hard to believe but the 2013-2014 Amarillo Bulls season is nearly here.
The Bulls Coaching Staff is set to open Main Camp tomorrow (Tuesday) in Brighton Michigan with the goal to select this year’s team by this weekend. Six forwards, two defenseman and two goaltenders are the players returning to the Bulls roster. Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said he is excited to see the hopefuls in attendance.
“I am looking forward to seeing who is at camp and what is at camp and then start to select the gentlemen that want to come down here and play in Amarillo come mid-August,” Williams said. “Our veterans are excited and I am excited to see them. Our returning players have a good sense of what it’s like and going to take to win a Robertson Cup. We don’t take it for granted as an organization or a group of players.”
Williams said the returning players bring so many different elements back to the roster.
“Our six forwards have skill and grit and our two defenseman, Joe Grabowski and Connor Frey, are an important part of the puzzle,” he said. “You have the two headed monster in net which is the way I like to look at it. We are fortunate to have two goaltenders coming back. I know it’s a different year but they have proven they can play at an elite level, and my expectations are them to do it again and be leaders on this year’s hockey team.”
Williams said that the mix of players as well as the character they bring will be a important part of the team’s success this year.
The South Division features many changes in the off season with new coaches in Odessa and Corpus Christi as well as the new team in Rio Grande Valley.
“Joe Coombs comes in Rio Grande Valley and John Becanic is in Corpus Christi and of course you add Matt Cressman, a division one hockey player and professional player in Odessa,” he said. “The South Division just got that much harder this year. With that you also have a lot of change in the landscape of the North American Hockey League as well.”
The Bulls held open camps in New Jersey and Illinois earlier this summer and Head Coach Dennis Williams said the reaction of players at all of these camps has been excellent.
“From the recruiting side of it, the camp numbers have been very well,” said Williams. “A big part of it is that we have been winning hockey games but it is just as important is that the kids see that we are moving players on to college hockey.
“You then encompass all of that with winning the Robertson Cup then it’s a pretty good start in terms of players coming to camp, as well as tendering and draft players.”
Fans are encouraged to stay in contact with the Bulls through Facebook and Twitter as photos will be posted from the main camp. There will be updates throughout the week on the progress of camp.
