HIDALGO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees are going to become very familiar foes.
The top two teams in the North American Hockey League’s South Division begin the first of four in a row when they meet tomorrow (Friday) night at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo TX. The first two conclude Saturday and then the Bulls host the next two the following weekend Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
The Bulls lead the Killer Bees by four points for first place in the South Division, and have a two- point advantage over the Minnesota Wilderness for the lead in the NAHL.
Amarillo split games with the Killer Bees in late October winning 2-1 but then falling 4-1. It’s been a terrific beginning to the Ranch Rodeo Road Trip for the Amarillo Bulls with four consecutive victories that has extended their current win streak to six. Bulls’ forward Brady Ferguson said this is an important stretch of games against Rio Grande Valley.
“We want to play much better than we did the last time we were here,” said Ferguson. “These four games are probably the biggest games so far this season.”
“We have to be very physical on them and play our game for sixty minutes to get the outcome that we want,” said defenseman Brendan Vetter.
This match-up also features some of the best special teams in the NAHL with the Bulls first on the power play and eighth on the penalty kill, while Rio Grande Valley is sixth best in both categories.
“We spent time in practice this week working on our special teams,” said Ferguson. “Our power play has been great, but the penalty kill hasn’t been very good so we have been trying to make it better.”
These two teams have been front runners early on in the season and have trailed a combined eight times. The Bulls and the Killer Bees have also been very efficient within the South Division. Amarillo has won 15 games, while the Killer Bees have collected 11.
Fans can catch both games live on CBS Sports Radio 1440, www.amarillobulls.com and on PPV courtesy of Fast Hockey, beginning with the Wayland Baptist University Warm Up Show at 6:45 pm. The puck drop follows at 7 pm.
It won’t be long before hockey is back at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. Fans can welcome back their Bulls when they face the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 pm. The Friday game is Military Appreciation Night, while Saturday fans are encouraged to help support the High Plains Food Bank.
