AMARILLO, TX – Overtime has not been a friend of the Amarillo Bulls in the second round of the Robertson Cup North American Hockey League playoffs.
The Bulls yielded a goal nearly midway through overtime and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Topeka RoadRunners on Thursday night at the Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. Topeka leads the Best-Of-Five Series 2-1, thanks to a pair of overtime wins, with game four set for tomorrow (Friday) night at 7 pm. If a fifth and deciding game is necessary, it would be played on Monday night at 7 pm in Topeka.
The puck was definitely bouncing the Amarillo Bulls way in the first 40 minutes. A goal early in the opening period, gave Amarillo a 1-0 advantage. Brooks Behling tapped home a bouncing buck on a partial breakaway at the 4:35 mark from Karl Beckman and Derek Hills. Goaltender Rasmus Tirronen badly handled the puck, and that allowed Behling to finish off the play and put the puck into the net. About 10 minutes later, Topeka tied the game 1-1.
The RoadRunners pulled ahead 2-1 early in the second period when they scored on a chance at the side of the net. Just five seconds later, the Bulls tied the game when Luke Jenkins shot was miss-handled once again by Tirronen and went into the net. Tirronen kicked Jenkins shot into his own net. Michael Erickson and Cody Freeman earned assists on the goal.
There was no scoring in the third period to set up overtime. A controversial penalty against the Bulls set up the Topeka scoring play that was also very questionable. Jordan Davis grabbed the puck and carried into the goal slot area before scoring. The referee allowed the goal to stand.
The RoadRunners finished the game 1 for 6 on the power play, while the Bulls were 0 for 6. Topeka outshot Amarillo 38-32 including 15-11 in the final stanza.
