RIO RANCHO, NMX – The New Mexico Mustangs continue to give the Amarillo Bulls’ difficulties this season especially at the Santa Ana Star Center. Two goals one minute apart in the third period broke open a close game as the Mustangs dumped the Bulls 5-2 on Friday night.
It was just the Bulls’ sixth loss of the season and first regulation defeat in just over a month. However, that setback coupled with the Topeka RoadRunners 6-3 win over Corpus Christi, dropped the Bulls to second place. It was New Mexico’s first game in 17 days.
The game was a disappointing one for the Bulls as they struggled right from the opening face-off. Amarillo trailed 3-1 going into the third period and pulled to within one when Mitch Rogge scored from Chris Cass at 8:46. That comeback was short lived as the Mustangs scored back to back goals 60 seconds apart to pull out to a 5-2 advantage and put the game away.
It was a tough opening period for the Amarillo Bulls as they fell behind 2-0 with the Mustangs scoring 41 seconds into the game and then in the final minute of the stanza. The Bulls came out flat and could only generate nine shots on goal.
The Bulls got into the scoring act early in the second period when TJ Sarcona pushed the puck across the goal line on a mad scramble in front at the 2:45 mark. However, 1:06 later, the Mustangs would extend their two goal lead when they found the back of the net on the power play.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the New Mexico Mustangs 35-27. There were a total of nine power plays with the Mustangs getting the lone goal.
These two teams will face one another again tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7:30 pm mountain, 8:30 pm central at the Santa Ana Star Center.
