AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls and the Topeka RoadRunners played their fifth one-goal game on Saturday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. For the third time in four meetings, extra time was required to decide the outcome and things didn’t go in the right direction for the hometown Bulls. Matt Barnes scored the game winning goal with 45 seconds gone by in overtime to lift the visiting RoadRunners to a come from behind 4-3 triumph over the Bulls.
Amarillo held a 3-2 advantage in the final minute of regulation only to see Topeka tie the game with three seconds remaining to force overtime. After the Bulls nearly missed a chance in the offensive zone, Topeka raced down the ice and Barnes was able to score with a quick shot to the top corner. The loss dropped the Bulls to fourth place in the South Division just two points back of third place Odessa, but only a single point ahead of the fifth place Corpus Christi IceRays.
The Bulls turned a slow start to the game around late in the opening period when forward Gleb Murtazin scored on a brilliant play in the goal crease working the puck around the defenseman and sliding it past goaltender Sam Metcalf. Alex Borowiec and Jason Brancheau earned assists on the play. Amarillo outshot Topeka 11-6 in the first period.
The visitors tied the game early in the second period when Will Schlagenhauf scored on a shot past the glove of goaltender Jason Grande. Two minutes later, the Bulls retook the lead off a face-off win by Jason Brancheau who was able to guide the puck back to the point for Marcus Chorney. Alex Peterson scored off of Chorney’s rebound that wasn’t properly directed away by goaltender Metcalf. The Bulls again had the shots on goal advantage 12-8.
Special teams provided the offense in the third period as each team found the back of the net via the power play. Will Schlagenhauf scored his second of the game on a screen shot from the point, but a short time later Jon Russell gave the Bulls they advantage for the third time in the game with a bullet past Metcalf. The RoadRunners pulled their goaltender in the final minute looking for the equalizer. Defenseman Sam Martel moved the puck around a Bulls sprawling defender and fired it past Grande to tie the game.
Forward Jon Russell nearly gave the Bulls another overtime win, but his shot was stopped by the goaltender. Topeka worked the puck up the ice and Matt Barnes scored to end the game.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Topeka RoadRunners 29-28. Topeka was 2 for 6 on the power play, while the Bulls were 1 for 5.
