Bulls Edge Brahmas 3-2 in Overtime

AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls kept their playoff hopes alive with a huge game in an extra session on Friday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.

Nikita Sokolov netted his first goal of the season on the power play in overtime to lift the Bulls to a 3-2 overtime win over the Lone Star Brahmas. With the victory the Bulls remained eight back of the Corpus Christi IceRays for the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division. Corpus Christi blanked Topeka on home ice.

It was the first game between the two teams since the trade that sent Austin O’Rourke and Jared Domin to the Bulls for Steven Ipri and Jon Russell. The game didn’t disappoint as the fans were treated to tight checking, spirited hockey right from the opening puck drop.

The Bulls welcomed a special visitor during the night as former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jay Novacek was in attendance for a meet and greet and to sign autographs.

Austin O’Rourke and Stephen Rex tallied for the Bulls, while Jason Grande notched the win in goal. Ture Linden and Justin Addamo got the goals for Lone Star.

The teams traded goals in the opening period as Ture Linden scored on a one-timer from Steve Ipri.   Four minutes later the Bulls pulled even as Austin O’Rourke’s shot deflected of a Lone Star defenseman and in behind Mitchell Gibson. The Brahmas outshot the Bulls 9-6 in the first period.

The Brahmas jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the second period as Justin Addamo scored from the high slot area via the power play. However, the resilient Bulls didn’t stop working and Stephen Rex was rewarded for his persistence with a shot that went by the glove of Gibson.

There was no scoring in the third period but the Bulls special teams were on point, killing off a two man advantage by the visitors. In overtime, the Brahmas were called for a penalty setting up the Bulls as Nikita Sokolov riffled a shot past goaltender Gibson to win the game.

The Amarillo Bulls were outshot by the Lone Star Brahmas 29-27. There were 12 power plays with each team scoring twice.

A four game home stand concludes tomorrow (Saturday) night for the Amarillo Bulls against the Lone Star Brahmas at 7 pm at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. It’s Merrick Pet Care Pet Night and there will be booths on the concourse and Pet Food giveaways throughout the night.
