BULLS DROP SEASON OPENER TO LONE STAR
Amarillo,Tx– The Amarillo Bulls dropped their season opener against the Lone Star Brahmas by a final of five to two after a strong effort by the Lone Star goalie Graham Burke.
The Bulls opened their 11th season in the NAHL hosting the Lone Star Brahmas who finished the ’19-20 season at the top of the Southern division. The Brahmas entered todays match with a 1-1 record after splitting last weekends series with the New Mexico Ice Wolves.
Amarillo broke the ice when UMASS commit John Lundy scored at the 7:20 mark of the first period, Cooper Fensterstock picked up the assist. The rest of the period was marked by physical play and strong defense as the Bulls took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Lone Star would even the game quickly in the second frame with a Jack Collins goal on Bulls goalie Max Gutjahr. Exactly 41 seconds later Nick Niemo put the Brahmas on top with an assist from Zach Purcell to make it 2-1 Lone Star. A Lone Star too many men penalty resulted in a Nick Dineen power play goal with an assist from Lundy and Jere Vaisanen to even the game at 2-2 with six minutes left in the period.
The score remained tied late into the third period when Collins scored his second goal of the afternoon to put Lone Star back in the lead with 6:29 left in regulation. While the Bulls controlled possession and had a wide lead in shots, a pair of late empty net goals by Joey Baez and Logan Cleary and strong play by goaltender Graham Burke the Brahmas secured a 5-2 victory.
Final Notes: Amarillo outshot Lone Star 33-23. Lone Star took five penalties and Amarillo was called for three penalties. Max Gutjahr made 19 saves on 21 shots faced. Both teams are back in action tomorrow at 3:05 CDT at the Budweiser Bullpen in Downtown Amarillo.
