Bulls Drop 7-4 Decision In Feisty Affair

AMARILLO, TX – Fans were treated to a feisty affair between the Amarillo Bulls and the Topeka RoadRunners on Saturday night in The Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The two teams combined for 202 penalty minutes and seven power play goals and another shorthanded, but it would be Topeka getting the upper hand 7-4.

It was the first of back-to-back games between the clubs and they will meet again Sunday at 6 pm. The Bulls still own a one-point lead over the Texas Tornado for second place in the NAHL’s South Division. It was the Bulls first regulation loss in their last 10 games. The RoadRunners were able to win their ninth in a row.

The difference in the game was the first period where the RoadRunners snapped a 1-1 tie with four straight goals, including three on a five-minute power play. The Bulls rallied with strong play over the final 40 minutes, but could only manage to get to within two goals.

Topeka jumped out to a quick lead on a shorthanded goal, but the Bulls got that one back when Zack Smoot scored on the power play at 3:28. Derek Hills and Luke Jenkins got assists on the goal. After that marker, the RoadRunners proceeded to score four straight goals, three via the power play and took a 5-1 lead. Nikifor Szczerba started in goal for the Bulls and was replaced by Gregg Gruehl after Topeka made it 4-1.

It was a wild second period with plenty of penalties and several skirmishes after the whistle. Each team had two players tossed from the game.

The Bulls battled back with two goals 61 seconds apart to make it 5-3. Dan Sherer scored first from Matt Johnson and McDougall and then Michael Erickson on the power play on a great feed from Mitch Rogge. Sean Keane added an assist on the goal.

In the third period, the RoadRunners added two more markers before the Bulls rounded out the scoring. TJ Sarcona found the back of the net via the power play from Cody Freeman at 17:49.

Topeka outshot Amarillo 43-31 including 27-18 in the first 40 minutes.

On Sunday, the first 200 fans will receive a limited edition red Bulls’ T-Shirt courtesy of UniFirst.
