Bulls Dominate Early And Beat Steel 4-1

BLAINE, MN – The veteran leadership powered the Amarillo Bulls to their 2nd straight win at the North American Hockey League Showcase.

Brenden Datema scored twice to lift the Bulls past the Chippewa Steel 4-1 at the Schwann Super Rink on Wednesday afternoon. Jason Brancheau and Alex Peterson tallied the other goals, while newcomer Ryan Winter posted his first NAHL win.

There have certainly been no problems with the starts for the Bulls the first two games at the Showcase. This time it was the power play that got Amarillo rolling, thanks to a big shot from the point courtesy of Brenden Datema. Less than a minute later, Alex Peterson took a feed from Brett Abdelnour and deposited the puck into the net. Late in the stanza, a Bulls face-off win set up a rebound in front of the net and a tap in by Jason Brancheau to make it 3-0. Abdelnour and Peterson each had two assists. Amarillo outshot Chippewa 13-5.

The second period featured several power play opportunities for the Bulls, but they were unable to extend their lead as Jackson Bernard did his best to keep his team in the game. The Steel got on the board as they capitalized on turnover. Grant Reichenbacher scored on a play near the side of the net. Chippewa outshot the Bulls 8-6 in the period.

There were more special teams opportunities in the third period for both teams as Rocky Russo’s charges had kill off an extended 5-on-3 disadvantage. Goaltender Ryan Winter came up with some key saves to keep his team in front. Late the period, the Bulls capitalized on a two-man advantage of their own as Brendan Datema scored from the blueline with help from Jason Brancheau and Gabriel Seger.

The Chippewa Steel outshot the Amarillo Bulls 24-23. The Bulls were 2 for 7 on the power play while the Steel failed to scored on five attempts.
