NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX – It’s been a while between wins for the Amarillo Bulls at the NYTEX Sports Center in North Richland Hills Texas.
The Amarillo Bulls had gone winless in 10 games at NYTEX dating back to December of 2013. That long drought came to an end on Saturday night as the Bulls connected on two power play goals and held off the Lone Star Brahmas 4-3 to take over sole possession of first place in the South Division.
Tyler Miknich, Jonathan Dagnal, Brendan Walkom and Charlie Singerhouse tallied for the Bulls, while goaltender Nikita Babintsev stopped 39 of 42 shots he faced.
In the early moments of the game you could sense that the Amarillo Bulls came out and were ready for battle against the Brahmas. Tyler Miknich scored his first NAHL goal when he followed up a rebound from George Mika and Eric Cooley at 6:28. Just over a minute later, the Brahmas pulled even when Aidan Spellacy tipped in a shot from the point. The Brahmas outshot the Bulls 14-6 in the opening period.
Special teams were the big key to a strong second period by the Bulls. Just after Amarillo had killed off a penalty, Jonathan Dagnal scored on a breakaway from Carson Moniz at the 5:23 mark. Later, Brendan Walkom netted his second when he scored on a play at the side of the net from Brendan Michaelian and Jonathon Dagnal at 9:34. The Bulls tallied two goals on just six shots in the middle stanza.
Another power play opportunity proved to be successful for the Amarillo Bulls as Charlie Singerhouse scored from George Mika and Jeff Solow. The Brahmas were not done yet as they fired back with two goals of their own including one on the power play to trim the deficit to 4-3. The second goal came in the final minute as Lone Star pulled its goaltender for the extra attacker. On the ensuing face-off the Bulls were able to tie up the Brahmas and prevent them from getting the equalizer.
The Lone Star Brahmas outshot the Amarillo Bulls 44-20 including 15-8 in the third period.
The same two teams are not done with one another yet as the Bulls will host the Lone Star Brahmas in a three-game weekend series starting next Friday at 7 pm at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The other two games of the set will be played Saturday and Sunday also at 7 pm. Friday is Plains Dairy Night, while Saturday is sponsored by Suddenlink. The Bulls will welcome the Dallas Stars Girls for Sunday’s contest.
