AMARILLO, TX – Perfect…
That was the Amarillo Bulls in many aspects of their two games at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center over the weekend. It certainly was the case on Saturday night as for the second straight game the Bulls defensively threw a blanket over the Corpus Christi IceRays and Jason Grande stopped all 27 shots he faced in Amarillo’s 1-0 triumph. Grande’s stellar play was the story in both Friday’s and Saturday’s contest facing a total of 66 shots and stopping them all. It was the first time this season the Bulls had posted back to back wins in the South Division and on home ice.
Another strong part of the Bulls play throughout the two games was on special teams as the Corpus Christi IceRays couldn’t score in 12 opportunities combined in the two games. That strong penalty kill was on display in the first and third periods as the Ice Rays failed to capitalize on a four minute 5 on 4 in the opening 20 minutes and a 5 on 3 in the final frame.
The Bulls were finally able to post a win against goaltender Chad Veltri who entered the game with a lifetime mark of 3-0 including two wins two weeks ago. Veltri was exceptionally good in the final 40 minutes as Amarillo had two in close chances late in the second and a couple near misses in the third.
Brett Abdelnour provided the lone offense for the Bulls that came in the second period. The Bulls were able to win the face-off and the puck was pushed to Abdelnour by Russian born players Nikita Sokolov and Gleb Murtasin. Abdelnour took the puck in the faceoff circle and lifted it past Veltri at the 4:21 mark.
The win by the Amarillo Bulls was their 7th of the season and third on home ice. The Bulls were able to extend their point collection streak to five games and in the process move to within a single point of third place in the South Division and just four points out of second.
The second half of the Amarillo Bulls four game home stand hits the ice next Thursday and Friday versus the red hot Lone Star Brahmas at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center at 7 pm. The Brahmas have picked up points in their last seven games.
Next Friday is Military Appreciation Night Presented By Sitel. All active military and veterans receive a free ticket to the game, while family members can get a ticket for just $10. The Bulls will be wearing special Military jerseys during both home games and a live auction takes place immediately after the game with proceeds to benefit America Celebrate Honor and Serve.
