SHREVEPORT, LA – Two short stretches hurt the Amarillo Bulls in their game on Friday night versus the Shreveport Mudbugs at George’s Pond Hirsch Coliseum. The Bulls surrendered two goals 45 seconds apart and then a quick goal, 22-seconds, after they had scored to open the third period and that was the difference in a 3-1 loss to the first place team in the South Division.
Rocky Russo’s charges failed to make up any ground on the Corpus Christi IceRays for the fourth and final playoff spot on the South Division after the Ice Rays lost to the Odessa Jackalopes.
There was no scoring in the first period between Amarillo and Shreveport, but it was a fast- skating, free-flowing affair. The Mudbugs had 18 first period shots but many of them were from long distance. Brett Abdelnour had the Bulls best chance on a play in front of the net.
Shreveport jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of markers 45 seconds apart. First it was Roberts Baranovskis who wired a shot past the stick side of goaltender Jason Grande and then Jay Fiewell tipped one home at the side of the net. The hometown Mudbugs outshot the Bulls 18-9 in the second period.
The Bulls made a game out of it to start the third period as Trey Bagwell scored off the face off on the power play just 38 seconds into the action. However, the one goal lead was short-lived as Jacob Holmers scored just 22 seconds later. It was a frantic finish through the remainder of the period with the Bulls unable to get any closer. Cameron Cook tallied into the empty net to round out the scoring.
The Shreveport Mudbugs outshot the Amarillo Bulls 53-23. Each team had a power play goal on two opportunities.
