CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Amarillo Bulls played nearly a flawless game on Friday night at American Bank Center and got themselves back in the South Division playoff race.
Two goals in the second and another two in the third lifted Rocky Russo’s charges to a 4-0 win over the Corpus Christi IceRays. The victory reduced the deficit between the third place IceRays and the fourth place Bulls to just eight points. Not only do the two teams play again tomorrow night, but they still have another four games remaining after this weekend.
Alex Peterson made his return to the line-up a good one by scoring twice including one into an empty net in the third period. Nick Stuckless, and Trey Bagwell tallied the other goals, while Jason Grande posted his third shutout of the season versus Corpus Christi.
The Bulls came out charging in the first period and had the IceRays on retreat mode for most of the stanza but couldn’t score. The shot differential was 11-3 for the visitors in the first stanza.
Corpus Christi had a better start to the second period and gave the Bulls all they could handle but goaltender Jason Grande was able to easily turn the shots aside. The Bulls had just eight shot in the middle frame, but made the most of them. Alex Peterson scored on a shot from near the face-off circle with help from Billy Duma. Nick Stuckless scored an unassisted goal nearly on the same play to give Amarillo a two-goal lead. The IceRays outshot the Bulls 13-8 in the period.
Special teams came up big for the Bulls in the final 20 minutes as the team killed off several penalties and then capitalized on a power play. Trey Bagwell scored on a pretty play in front of the net from Austin O’Rourke at 6:09. In the final minute the IceRays had their goalie pulled and a power play chance but it was Peterson scooping the puck away from the defender, and then firing it into an empty net to round out the scoring. The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Corpus Christi IceRays 31-24 in the contest.
