Amarillo, TX – The Amarillo Bulls announced, Tuesday afternoon, that forward Matt Allen will be the next captain in the team’s 10-year history.

A native of Minco, OK, Allen is in the midst of his second season in Amarillo, after playing 32 regular season games last season, along with 13 games in the 2018-2019 Robertson Cup Playoffs.

“We never jump to a quick decision on who our captain is going to be, because it is such an important role on such a successful team,” said Bulls Coach Rocky Russo. “The captain is an extension of the coaching staff, and that means taking on a lot of responsibility. We look for a guy who can balance a great relationship with the coaches and his teammates, hold the locker room accountable, and set a great example game after game.”

Allen, who became a fan favorite for his hard-working and relentlessness last season, has carried those his leadership on to this year’s team.

“The guy who exemplifies everything that we look for in a captain is Matt,” said Russo. “It has been that way since he first set foot in the door in Amarillo.”

The team learned of the captaincy following Tuesday morning’s practice and quickly swarmed Allen in celebration.

“It’s a huge honor to be the captain of such a great organization,” said Allen. “It’s hard to put in to words, but I am just so honored. We have a great group of guys here. Nothing changes because of this letter. I need to be there to keep making sure that everyone is working hard and help to motivate the team.”

Allen’s captaincy comes with a heightened sense of pride for the Bulls, Amarillo, and southern hockey.

“We are very confident in Matt and his ability to set the pace for this team on and off the ice,” said Director of Operations Austin Sutter. “Matt comes from a non-traditional hockey market within the Texas Amateur Hockey Association and will be an inspiration to the young boys and girls in our local youth hockey program. He is joining a great group of Bulls alumni who have had the honor to represent this franchise as the captain. Matt will undoubtedly represent the Bulls organization with the excellence and dedication that it deserves.”

The Bulls will return to the Budweiser Bullpen on Friday, October 25 to take on the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in the first ever, regular season meeting between the sides. Mark Shelley will broadcast the game from the Spicy Mike’s Bar-B-Q Broadcast Booth, and the action will begin at 7:05PM CST on 107.1 Nash Icon and Hockey TV.
