The Bulls announced today that they have hired David Nies (pronounced Nize) as an Assistant Coach replacing Tony Attanucci who has decided not to return to pursue other opportunities in hockey.
Nies has a very familiar background that involves working with several Amarillo Bulls Alumni. He was most recently Video Coordinator and Director of Analytics for Merrimack College where Collin Delia, Hampus Gustafsson, John Gustafsson and Jeff Solow play.
“I’m very excited to get working right away,” Nies said. “I’m so fortunate to work for a great ownership group and Coach Russo and to be part of the Amarillo family.”
Bulls New Head Coach Rocky Russo is thrilled to welcome Nies to the Bulls Family and the Texas Panhandle.
“I am excited to add David to our staff,” he said. “His experience as both a player and a coach at the NCAA level will be a tremendous asset for the Bulls organization. I expect David to make an impact not just on our hockey club but also the community. He is very excited to join us on the staff, as well as move to Amarillo and become a part of this great city.”
During 2015-16, Nies was an Assistant Coach at NCAA Division III Curry College where former Bulls Captain Joey DiBenedetto plays. Nies was also the Assistant Coach with the ACHA Division I Ohio University as well as a Volunteer Assistant Coach with Division III University of Southern Maine.
Nies said what drew him to Amarillo was that the great players and coaches that have gone through the organization over the years.
“It’s a top notch organization and Coach Russo and I spoke at length and can’t wait to get rolling,” he said. “I think I can bring a strong work ethic, show up to work every day and be excited to be there. I have a passion for the game, to teach players and help them develop and that whole aspect of it. Winning is one thing and yes it is important, but we want to make sure we bring good people into there and work it the right way.”
Amarillo Bulls Vice President and General Manager Rick Matchett was thrilled to welcome David Nies to the family.
