One of the first things anyone looks for in a defenseman is size. Gagik Malakyan has plenty of that to go around and is not afraid to use it during the 2019-2020 season.
The 6’3, Russian born defenseman, while light-hearted off the ice, is a physically intimidating threat on it. The left-handed Malakyan, who turns 20 during the Bulls’ home opening weekend, combines a powerful 217 pounds with his terrorizing size to turn away would-be scorers. Because of this, there is no question as to what makes him an Amarillo Bulls fan favorite.
This season, as Malakyan prepares for his third stint in Amarillo, the potential for the blueliner climbs with every passing day. A season ago, he showed the promise of a two-way future, netting a pair of goals, one of which was a game winning tally against Odessa, to go along with his six assists. Beyond his point totals in the 2018-2019 season, Malakyan racked up an impressive +20 rating during his time on ice.
Playing five postseason games during his time in Amarillo, Malakyan will undoubtably provide a leadership role as the Bulls look to overcome their shortcomings in last season’s playoffs and recapture the Robertson Cup for the first time since the 2012-2013 season.
