THE SERIES: It’s the last set of games for the Amarillo Bulls and the Topeka RoadRunners this weekend. Both teams have already been eliminated from the playoffs and will close their 2017-2018 seasons on Saturday. Last weekend, when the RoadRunners came to Amarillo, the Bulls swept with a 5-1 win on Friday and a 6-1 win on Saturday. This was the Bulls second sweep of the season with the first being recorded back on October 7th-8th against the Corpus Christi IceRays. Tonight we look to continue the momentum from last weekend and walk away with another 4 points.
PLAYOFF PRIMER: The Amarillo Bulls and the Topeka RoadRunners have both been eliminated from the South Division playoffs. It’s the Bulls fourth straight year to be on the outside looking in, while the RoadRunners will miss the post season for the second straight season. The Shreveport Mudbugs have clinched the South Division with 89 points while the Lone Star Brahmas, Odessa Jackalopes and Corpus Christi IceRays have all locked down playoff positions in the south.
ACROSS THE SOUTH: Tonight while the Bulls and RoadRunners are going head-to-head there will be other game action across the South Division. The Lone Star Brahmas battle against the IceRays in Corpus Christi and the Shreveport Mudbugs face the Odessa Jackalopes in Odessa.
STATS AND NOTES: Goaltender Jason Grande has now passed Nikita Babintsev (2016-17) for games played in a single season! Babintsev holds the third place spot on the record board with 43 games played, while Paul Berrafato (2012-13) and Grande hold second place with 44. With 46 games played in a season, the record is held by Nikifor Szczerba (2010-11) and Anton Martinsson (2015-16). If Grande appears in both games this weekend he will be tied with Szczerba and Martinsson for the Bulls record. Grande leads the NAHL in minutes played with 2,474, is second in the league with 5 shutouts and is second in saves with 1,292 behind Emil Zetterquist of the Coulee Region Chill who has 1,467.
After last weekends outstanding performance by the Bulls, defenseman Brendon Michaelian was named the NAHL South Division Star of the Week. The Robert Morris University commit tallied four points on the weekend with an assist on Friday and two goals and an assist on Saturday. Michaelian is the Bulls leading scorer with 34 points in 57 games played.
