THE SERIES: It’s the first of five games in a row between the Amarillo Bulls and the Shreveport Mudbugs. The two teams will meet this week for three at the Budweiser Bull Pen and then two more next Friday and Saturday, St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, at Hirsch’s Coliseum George’s Pond. Four of the five meetings were decided by two goals or less and one required overtime.
WHAT’S AT STAKE: Shreveport Mudbugs are in a battle for home ice in the South Division for the first round of the playoffs. The Mudbugs currently sit in second place just one point ahead of the Wichita Falls Wildcats and two ahead of the Corpus Christi IceRays with 13 games remaining. The Bulls are sixth in the South Division and just two points back of fifth place. The Bulls have a two game home win streak entering play this week.
ACROSS THE SOUTH: Action gets underway early in the South Division as the Wichita Falls Wildcats entertain the Corpus Christi IceRays at Kay Yeager Coliseum. It’s the first of three games in a row. The other match-up for the weekend has the Odessa Jackalopes visiting the Lone Star Brahmas at NYTEX Sports Center. The Topeka RoadRunners have the weekend off and begin their voyage up to Alaska where they will face the Kenai River Brown Bears and the Fairbaks IceDogs on consecutive weekends.
BUG BITES: The Mudbugs are 6-1-1 in their last eight games including in that is a sweep on the road against the Lone Star Brahmas. Erik Zohovs is back in the line-up again after missing several games due to an injury. Goaltenders Dylan Lubbesmeyer and John Roberts have shared the goaltending duties. Six of their wins on the road have come by two goals, but they have managed just one win when trailing after 40 minutes. The Mudbugs lead the North American Hockey League with the best power play percentage at 44 including #1 on the road markers on the man advantage.
