Third Period Surge Leads Bulls Past IceRays 3-2

AMARILLO, TX – A third-period surge by the Amarillo Bulls helped them remain alive for a playoff spot on Friday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
Alex Peterson and Trey Bagwell each tallied goals to lift the Bulls past Corpus Christi IceRays 3-2 and pull to within seven points of the last playoff spot in the South Division. The Bulls had over 40 shots on goal and played well most of the night despite a couple of mental lapses that allowed the IceRays to get back into the game. Trevor Micucci posted the win in goal his first as a member of the Amarillo Bulls this season. Micucci had a strong game in goal turning aside 22 of 24 shots he faced and carried the momentum from a strong outing in long relief last Saturday in Topeka.
There was no scoring the first period but it was the Bulls that had a major of the shots with 19 at goaltender Chad Veltri. The Bulls caught a break late in the stanza when Jayson DiMizio received a five minute major and a game ejection for a bad cross check on Nikita Sokolov.
Early in the second period the Bulls broke through and took a 1-0 lead as Brendan Datema’s shot from the point beat goaltender Chad Veltri. Jared Domin and Cameron Bartkoski earned assists on the play. The IceRays pulled even at the 16:31 mark when Garrett Halford’s shot just snuck under the cross bar past Micucci. The Bulls outshot the IceRays 14-4 in the stanza.
It was a wide open third period that had the Bulls coming out firing but unable to take the lead. Just past the midway mark, Alex Peterson finally gave the Bulls the advantage when his well placed shot beat Veltri. Jared Domin received an assist on the play. Just over two minutes later, the Bulls extended the lead by two when Trey Bagwell continued his hot hand by scoring on a breakaway.
Down the stretch the IceRays pulled their goaltender looking to tie the game, but the Bulls defense did an outstanding job preventing the opposition from scoring.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Corpus Christi IceRays 41-25. All of the game’s goals came at full strength so the penalty killing had just minimum work to do.
It’s a busy Saturday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center when the Bulls host the IceRays at 7 pm. It’s Amarillo Youth Hockey Retro Jersey Night and the Bulls will wear special jerseys during the game. A live auction takes place immediately after the game with proceeds benefiting Amarillo Youth Hockey. There will also be a ceremony at the beginning of the game to honor the players parents that are in attendance.
