TOPEKA, KS – After a terrific start to the Robertson Cup, the Amarillo Bulls look to post back to back wins as they face their new rival the Topeka RoadRunners tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 pm at Kansas Expo Center-Landon Arena.
The Bulls beat Michigan 5-2 yesterday afternoon to begin the tourney, while the RoadRunners were beaten 4-3 in overtime by the Fairbanks IceDogs last night.
It’s the 18thmeeting of the season between the two teams, but the Bulls have won the last two games, including 3-1 to take the South Division title last week. This contest is expected to be another hard fought affair, with both teams not giving an inch knowing what is at stake.
A win by the Bulls tonight would guarantee them a spot at no worse than Friday’s National Semi-Final game. A loss by the RoadRunners would force them to beat Michigan tomorrow or be eliminated from the tournament.
Nikifor Szczerba has been outstanding in goal for the Bulls, making 24 big stops against Michigan on Tuesday afternoon. It is uncertain as to who Topeka will start in goal. Rasmus Tirronen was pulled early in the second period last night after Fairbanks made it 2-0. Eric Rohrkemper took over in goal and kept his team in the game, but gave up the overtime winner.
The Bulls and the Fairbanks Ice Dogs each have two points in the tournament while Topeka and Michigan have. Two points are awarded for a win, and no points are given for an overtime loss.
