Robertson Cup Starts Friday Night For The Bulls

THE TOURNAMENT: The 2013 Robertson Cup North American Hockey League National Championship Tournament begins on Friday at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, TX. The three time South Division Champion Amarillo Bulls and the Central Division winners Bismarck Bobcats are the lone returning teams from last year’s event. The Jamestown Ironmen, which won the North, and will make their first tournament, and the Wenatchee Wild, who are back, are the other teams.

BULLS ROBERTSON CUP HISTORY: It’s the third trip to the Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament for the Amarillo Bulls. In two previous appearances, the Bulls have posted a combined record of 5-4 at the championship while advancing to two National Semi-Finals.

EXPERIENCE FOR THE BULLS: The Amarillo Bulls are one of few teams with lots of experience on their side at the Robertson Cup. More than 20 players plus the Bulls Coaching Staff have participated in this event.

TIME OFF: It will be eight days between the Bulls victory in game 3 at the South Division Final and the opening contest on Friday night. The Jamestown Ironmen will have been off the ice for seven days, while the Bismarck Bobcats have been off for six. The Wenatchee Wild concluded their West Division series with Game five on Tuesday night.

THE FORMAT: The format is a single round robin with the top two teams advancing to the Championship Game on Monday night.

GAME PREVIEWS:

GAME 1 – AMARILLO BULLS @ JAMESTOWN IRONMEN – FRIDAY – 7:30 PM

 The Bulls, which are the No. 1 Seed, begin play on Friday at 7:30 pm when they host the Jamestown Ironmen. The two teams met previously at last year at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota that the Bulls were able to win 5-1. The Bulls and Ironmen are both riding six game winning streaks heading into the first game.

Jamestown swept both the Kalamazoo Jr. Wings and the Soo Eagles to take their first title in the North. It’s the third different North Division winner to play at the Robertson Cup (Michigan Warriors & Port Huron Fighting Falcons.

 GAME 2 – AMARILLO BULLS VS. BISMARCK BOBCATS – SATURDAY – 7:30 PM

The Bobcats captured their fifth straight Central Division Title and beat the No. 2 ranked overall team during the regular season, the Austin Bruins. The Bulls have met the Bobcats on two previous occasions and came up victorious. The first victory was at last year’s NAHL Showcase in Blaine, while the second one was at the Robertson Cup in Frisco. That win propelled the Bulls back into the National Semi-Final.

          This will mark the final round-robin game for both teams at the tournament. It’s also the second time these two teams will face one another. The two clubs met in September at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota that the Wild won 5-3.
