Powerplay Goals And 43 Shots Lift Bulls To Win

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Amarillo Bulls scored two power play goals and fired 43 shots on goal en route to a 4-1 win over the Corpus Christi IceRays on Saturday night at American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, TX.

It was the Bulls 25th win of the season and snapped a two-game losing streak. The victory also propelled Amarillo into a second place tie with the Texas Tornado in the South Division. The Tornado dropped a 3-0 decision to the Wenatchee Wild.

The game started nearly 45 minutes later than the normal start time due to another event in the building earlier in the day.

When things got underway, the Bulls began slowly but did score the first goal when Mitch Rogge banged in a loose puck near the side of the net. Brooks Behling and Joe Kozlak earned assists on the goal at the 8:36 mark. The IceRays outshot the Bulls 10-6 in the first stanza.

The next forty minutes were all Bulls as they fired a combined 37 shots on goal. Defenseman Derek Hills gave Amarillo a 2-0 lead near the end of the period when his wrist shot found the back of the net. Matt Johnson and Michael Erickson had assists on the goal.

The first five minutes of the third period were again dominated by the Bulls offense and it started Joe Kozlak with another power play goal, his sixth in his last seven games. Dan McDougall and Michael Erickson picked up assists on the goal. After that Brooks Behling stole the puck and riffled a shot past the IceRays goaltender from Kozlak and Rogge at 5:07.

The IceRays rounded out the scoring with a power play goal later in the period.

Goaltender Nikifor Szczerba was solid in net, turning aside 32 of 33 shots he faced. He made some important saves in the first two periods to keep his team in front. The Bulls were 2 for 3 on the power play, while the IceRays were 1 for 4.
