AMARILLO, TX – The Final Day…
It’s the toughest one for many hockey players looking to make the team, but if you are trying to make the Amarillo Bulls, the 2013 Robertson Cup National Champions then it becomes that much more intense.
The last day of the Amarillo Bulls Main Camp is underway in Brighton, Michigan as the players make their final attempt to impress the Bulls Coaching Staff. Head Coach Dennis Williams said the morning sessions were terrific.
“It’s was a really good morning skate that we had,” said Williams. “We see that no one feels comfortable on a spot being given to them and further more they don’t want their spot taken. The new guys are playing like they want to take a veteran’s spot. It’s been fantastic in that sense. The games themselves and the pace of play have been great. It’s an intense day and there are not a lot of friends out there, even amongst veterans.”
There will be one final all-star game tonight before the Bulls Coaching Staff sits down and begin their final deliberations. Williams said that he has no idea where he is headed on roster spots.
“That’s a decision that has to be made in six and a half hours,” said Williams. “It’s tough and we try to do our best as coaches to pick what player will fit in to what we are trying to do. We are not perfect and make mistakes just like everyone else out there does. We try to evaluate players on not only talent but character, compete-level and drive.”
Williams said they players they choose must also know how to adapt to the systems that the Bulls utilize.
“There are not a lot of systems in the all-star games so we need to see how the players are going to adapt when it comes to systems like fore-check, defensive-zone coverage, power play and penalty kill,” said Williams. “It’s not as simple as selecting a player that scores ten goals over the weekend. You try to make sure that they are going to buy in what we are trying to sell.”
