AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls power play was able to connect at just the right time on Friday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. George Mika wired a slap shot from the point at the 2:17 mark of overtime to lift the Bulls past the Odessa Jackalopes 3-2.
That victory was the Bulls 2nd straight at home and 18th of the season. Colin Price and Charlie Singerhouse paced the Bulls to 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the game only to see Odessa battle back to force overtime. Goaltender Nikita Babintsev posted the victory stopping 35 of 37 shots he faced.
The Bulls tallied the game’s first goal as Colin Price banged home a puck in front of the net from George Mika and Eric Cooley. After a slow start to the game the Bulls quickly caught fire and had 17 first period shots. Odessa managed just 14 but all of those were from long range and easily handled by the goaltender.
Odessa pulled even midway through the second period when Noah Poindexter’s shot went off the glove of Babintsev and into net just after the Bulls had killed off a penalty. At times the Bulls were all over the Jackalopes inside the offensive zone, but were unable to get anything else past goaltender Jonny Hogue. Amarillo outshot Odessa 20-12 in the second period.
The action heated up in the third period and the Bulls had a goal called back for the 2nd straight game. Charlie Singerhouse pushed the puck across the goal line but it was deemed no goal as the referee blew his whistle early causing the play to stop. It was the 2nd straight game where Singerhouse had a goal waived off. The Jackalopes pulled even at 2-2 midway through the 2nd period as converted forward Connor Stuart tipped home a puck past Babintsev.
In overtime the Bulls got a power play opportunity when the referee called a penalty on a partial breakaway by Alex Truscott. It didn’t take the Bulls long to get rolling on the special teams as George Mika received a pass from Phil Fromberger and deposited the puck on the short side past Hogue. Colin Price also added an assist on the play.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Odessa Jackalopes 46-37. There were six total power plays in the contest with the Bulls going 1 for 5 and the Jacks were 0 for 1.
These two teams will meet again tomorrow (Saturday) night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center at 7 pm. It’s Amarillo Youth Hockey Night and the Bulls will wear their special jerseys with a live auction to follow immediately after the game.
