Gibson, Rey & Robert Morris off to NCAA Tourney

AMARILLO, TX – It has certainly been a thrilling season for two Amarillo Bulls alumni with Robert Morris University.

Greg Gibson and John Rey and their Colonial teammates won the school’s first Atlantic Hockey Championship and secured a birth in the NCAA Men’s Division I hockey tournament. Robert Morris defeated Cody Freeman and Geoff Fortman of Canisius College 7-4 in the final.

Gibson was front and center in the championship game scoring twice, while John Rey notched an assist in the contest. The difference in the game was the third period when Robert Morris fired five goals. The Colonials advanced to the final by defeating TJ Sarcona and Niagara University 5-4 in overtime. Gibson again had a solid game scoring the first goal for Robert Morris. Sarcona chipped in two assists in the loss for Niagara.

Robert Morris will see action at the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon when they face the #1 team in the country Minnesota in St. Paul. The game can be seen on ESPN2 at 4:30 pm central time.

Gibson is fourth on the Colonials this year in scoring with 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points in 40 games. Defenseman John Rey, former Bulls Team Captain and fresh off winning a national championship last season, has played 36 games for Robert Morris and has 12 assists.

Robert Morris will get infused by more Bulls’ players next season as Brady Ferguson and Timmy Moore head to that program.

Meantime, forward Brooks Behling and Providence College are headed to the tournament as an At-Large team. The Friars will face Quinnipiac on Friday at 4:30 pm central in Bridgeport, Conn.

The current Amarillo Bulls close out their regular season with two games against the Odessa Jackalopes on Friday and Saturday night at Ector County Coliseum at 7:17 pm.
