ODESSA, TX – The Amarillo Bulls dug down deep and got a win when it mattered most on Thursday night.
Jared Domin, Austin O’Rourke, Trey Bagwell, and Jason Brancheau all had multi-point games and goaltender Jason Grande was outstanding making over 45 saves as the Bulls edged the Odessa Jackalopes 4-3. The Bulls pulled to within seven points of Corpus Christi for the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division. The Bulls and the Jacks have two more meetings between one another set for tomorrow and Saturday night at Ector County Coliseum.
The game didn’t start well for the Bulls as Odessa jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the game was seven minutes old. Forward Petr Miko collected a rebound at the side of the net and beat goaltender Grande. After that, the Bulls caught fire and tallied two in just over two and a half minutes. Trey Bagwell scooped up a rebound and stuffed it behind goaltender Alex Camarre to tie the game from Alex Peterson and Jason Brancheau. Forward Austin O’Rourke gave the Bulls the lead on a similar play in front of the net from Bagwell and Brancheau. The Bulls were outshot by Odessa 14-13 in the first period.
Special teams gave the Bulls a two goal lead early in the second period as defenseman Brendon Michaelian’s shot from the point was deflected in by Cameron Bartkoski at 2:15. The home side pulled back to within a goal when Miko converted a 2 on one break for his second of the game. It was all Odessa in the middle stanza with 19 shots on goal, while the Bulls just had eight.
The power play added more insurance for the Bulls as Jared Domin scored on a great play from Cameron Bartkoski and and Austin O’Rourke. Late in the game, Odessa rounded out the scoring when Evan Somoza pushed the puck across the goal line at 16:11. The Jackalopes pulled their goaltender in the final 70 seconds looking to tie the game but the Bulls played outstanding defense and kept the puck out.
The Odessa Jackalopes outshot the Amarillo Bulls 47-24. There were a total of four power plays between the two teams with the Bulls scoring on two of the attempts.
The 10th round of the New Avenues I-27 Freeway Series is set for tomorrow (Friday) night at Ector County Coliseum. Fans can tune into the action live on CBS Sports Radio 1440 and online at www.amarillobulls.com beginning with pre-game coverage at 6:40 pm.
The Amarillo Bulls begin a four game home stand on Friday, Feb. 9 and Saturday, Feb. 10 vs. Shreveport Mudbugs at 7 pm. Friday is the return of the Family Four Pack for $44 and Bring A Bud Pack for $22. It’s also Scout Night with discounted tickets for troops and packs.
Saturday is First Responders Night Presented By ER Now. Free Tickets for First Responders, while Family Members pay $8. There will be displays on the concourse and a vehicle parade during the intermission. It’s also the 2ndScout Night.
