Comeback bids fall short in another OT loss to Cats

IMG_4479AMARILLO, TX – A night of comebacks and difficult obstacles fell short for the Amarillo Bulls on Saturday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The Bulls rallied from one two- goal and two one-goal deficits but in the end overtime was not their friend again and lost 5-4 to the Wichita Falls Wildcats. Oddly, it was the same score as Friday night and it was also third time in the last four games that Matt Nicholson’s bunch failed to secure the win in the extra session.

George Mika had another two goals for the Bulls, while Hayden Broomhead and Brendan Walkom picked up singles. Kosta Likourezos and Jeff Solow each set up two goals. Kyle Madore played well but was tagged with the loss in goal. Jonathan Bendorf was on a mission for the Wildcats scoring three times, while Roman Kinal and Ilya Skvortesev added singles. The Amarillo Bulls had 53 shots on goal at goaltender Evan Moyse who was able to pick up the win.

The difference in the game was the second period where the Bulls couldn’t convert two five on three power play chances.

It was the Wichita Falls Wildcats that netted the game’s first two goals and owned a 2-0 lead in the 20:56 of the game thanks to a pair of goals from Jonathan Bendorf. It was all Amarillo after that, peppering goaltender Moyse for 22 shots in the middle stanza. Forward George Mika continued his great work over the weekend when he fired a shot past Moyse to get the Bulls on the board. Kosta Likourezos and Hayden Broomhead had assists on the play. Seven minutes later, Hayden Broomhead tied the game when he scored on a nice toe-drag and shot that beat the goaltender from Jeff Solow.

A total of four goals were traded between the two teams in the third period. Roman Kinal gave the visitors the lead when he scored on a rocket just under the cross bar. But 63 seconds later, the Bulls tied the game converting a 2-on-1 break. Brendan Walkom scored on a nice move from Charlie Singerhouse and Phil Fromberger. The Wildcats fired their fourth goal just past the midway mark of the period on a good shot from Ryan Orgel. That lead lasted just a handful of seconds as the Bulls raced up the ice on a 3-on-2 break that was finished off by George Mika from Jeff Solow and Kosta Likourezos. The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Wichita Falls Wildcats 19-10 in the third period.

Overtime featured lots of scrambled play and two excellent opportunity for the Bulls that were denied by the goaltender. In the final 1:41 the Bulls failed to clear the puck from their own end and that allowed Jonathan Bendorf to score his third of the game on a play in front of the net.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Wichita Falls Wildcats 53-41. There were nine total power plays in the game with the Bulls going 0 for 6 and the Wildcats were 1 for 3
