TOPEKA, KS – The Amarillo Bulls surrendered two third-period goals and dropped a 2-1 decision to the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in the final round robin game for both teams at the Robertson Cup North American Hockey League Championship Tournament on Thursday afternoon in Topeka, Kansas.
The Bulls will play in the National Semi-Final game on Friday night at 7:35 pm against the survivor of the second game between the Topeka RoadRunners and the Michigan Warriors. Should the Bulls play Topeka it will be the 21sttime overall, including pre-season, regular season, playoffs and Robertson Cup. If the Bulls play Michigan, they will meet for the third time and second this week.
In Thursday’s round-robin finale, the goaltenders were solid and Nikifor Szczerba and Joe Phillipi put on a terrific show keeping the game close all game long.
it was the Bulls that struck first in the second period. John Rey followed up a loose rebound and deposited it in the back of the net from Matt Johnson at 9:29.
In the final 20 minutes, Fairbanks notched two goals just over four minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead. Amarillo worked hard to get the equalizer but couldn’t beat Phillipi.
There were a total of 11 power plays in the game with no team being able to score on the man advantage.
