Furry tallied two goals including the game winner in a shootout as the Bulls clipped the Odessa Jackalopes on Saturday night. The Toledo Ohio Native, who played for Belle Tire U18, is first tendered player for the Bulls for next season.
Furry said its been a wild ride from Ohio and Michigan down to the Texas Panhandle where he never thought he would be.
“It’s unbelievable and pretty crazy actually,” he said. “I never imagined myself playing for the Amarillo Bulls so it’s a real honor to be able to do so.”
Furry suited up last Thursday in Odessa and quickly meshed with his linemates Charlie Singerhouse and Brendan Walkom. The trio worked well together in the home game Friday night and then finally when it all came together on Saturday.
“It was for sure a crazy experience coming from Triple A and going right into the North American Hockey League,” said Furry. “It was a great going out there skating with the guys and getting a feel for the North American Hockey League for next year.”
Furry collected 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 32 games for Belle Tire U18 of the Tier I Elite Hockey League. He said one of the reasons why he chose Amarillo is the early telephone conversations he had with Head Coach Matt Nicholson.
“We talked quite a bit and he would ask me a bunch of questions,” Furry said. “We got to know each other really good. I look up to him as a role model and as a coach. I think we have that really good connection that’s going to help me continue in hockey.”
Furry also credited his parents as well as other coaches over the years that have helped him get to junior hockey.
“In those years I’ve had great coaches who I’ve looked up to as leaders,” he said. “I played Double A growing up and I’ve looked up to them all and they have helped me on the ice. That’s where I feel I got stronger especially when I went to play for Belle Tire as they really made an impact on me and help me push forward. I got the experience of junior life playing away from home in Belle Tire, and what I had to do to get to juniors.”
Brendan Furry is the Amarillo Bulls first tendered player for the 2017-18 season.
